Brangwyn's South Corridor

Sir Frank Brangwyn

American, born Belgium. 1867 - 1956

South Corridor of the main lobby in 30 Rockefeller Plaza

Sir Frank Brangwyn’s four South Corridor murals were commissioned to complement the murals by Jose Maria Sert in the north corridor, although most observers agree this aesthetic bond wasn’t achieved. The overall theme of Brangwyn’s murals is man’s search for eternal truth through Christ’s teachings; the first three represent the stages in man’s conquest of the physical world, while the fourth implies the essence of his destiny. Brangwyn’s first work was exhibited by the British Royal Academy when he was eighteen- in 1952, he became the first living artist to have a one-man show there.
