Panther Mural

Jenry Billings

American. 1901 - 1985

Third floor ladies' powder room, Radio City Music Hall

This decorative, enigmatic work, on display in the ladies room, stylistically moves away from Art Deco and toward Surrealism, where dreams and unreality were key themes. Here, the crouching panther, ready to spring, dominates the foreground and is a clear metaphor for power. His turned head draws attention to the desolate background, an isolated, eerie, dreamlike setting charged with mystery. Billings’ work can also be found in the Whitney Museum of American Art.
