The Phantasmagoria Of The Theater
Louis Bouche
American. 1896 - 1969
Walls of the main lounge of Radio City Music Hall
When Bouche was commissioned to paint a series of vignettes to represent various theatrical scenes for the walls of the main lounge, he chose five eras as the focus for his lively narrative. He mingled various epochs in single scenes, combining early stage imagery with modern characters. Painted in Bouche’s academic style on specially prepared, pyroxylin-coated black walls, the colors are bright, the compositions skillfully arranged, and the charming paintings stand out from the dark wall.
