Artwork
Lobby | Man and Nature
This three-part wood-carved sculptural mural by Carl Milles was crafted from hundreds of planks of northern Michigan pine that were glued together and held under great pressure for days to solidify them. The central unit, 11 feet 6 inches high by 7 feet 6 inches wide by 3 feet deep, depicts a hunter who, while riding through a forest, hears the exquisite song of a bird in the foliage above him. The song is so beautiful that he reins in his horse and is caught in the web of the enchanting music. The nymph, drawn towards music, and the fawn, drawing away from beauty, illustrate mans struggle between good and evil.
Main Entrance
Two limestone panels by Carl Paul Jennewein depict two male figures, one on each side of the entrance, representing industry and agriculture, the keystones of our civilization.
