From Host Portraits to Five-Timers Club: Everything You Need to Know About Rockefeller Center’s ‘Live from New York: The SNL50 Experience’

March in New York City holds the promise of warmer times ahead, though a last chance to savor the cozy activities of winter still remains. In these anticipatory days before temperatures start to rise and the days get longer, pass the time at a concert or comedy show, or feel the heat as fans ignite the stands in a sports arena. From The Roots at Blue Note Jazz Club to the Big East Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden, the city offers plenty of options for indoor fun.

There’s something to be said for holding onto the winter dining scene as well. Soon enough, you’ll be sipping a spritz at Lodi, but first, thaw out one more time with a glass of red and a plate of pappardelle in a vibey velvet booth at Jupiter.

On March 9, clocks will spring forward, and excitement will fill the air. Celebrate by getting your groove on at the Flamenco Festival, sharing a laugh with Kevin Hart at Radio City Music Hall, or donning your finest shamrock green and cheering on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Here are our top seven picks for things to do in New York City in March.

1. New York International Children’s Film Festival

February 28-March 16

Who says adults should get to have all the film festival fun? The New York International Children’s Film Festival caters to budding cinephiles ages 3 to 18, with a lineup that features award-winning actors, lively shorts, animation, foreign-language films, and more. Screenings will take place across multiple venues, including DCTV, the IFC Center, Scandinavia House, and the SVA Theatre. While the movies involved are all family-friendly, this is not mere child’s play; it’s an Oscar-qualifying festival with about 100 films to see. Take your little critics to a few screenings — you never know, you might just inspire a future in Hollywood.

2. Flamenco Festival

March 6-9

New York City Center’s annual Flamenco Festival is a survey of the Spanish dance form that’s been wowing audiences for more than 20 years. This year, NYCC will feature dancing duo Alfonso Losa and Patricia Guerrero, along with renowned companies led by Manuel Liñán and Eva Yerbabuena. Viewers can expect extravagant costumes, captivating footwork, intriguing blends of classic and nuevo styles, and up-tempo energy throughout — along with impressive vocal and instrumental moments from top Spanish performers.

3. Kevin Hart at Radio City Music Hall

March 7-9

Stand-up sensation Kevin Hart is laughing all the way to Radio City Music Hall, and tickets to join him are selling out fast. The award-winning actor and comedian’s Acting My Age tour will come to NYC for three nights only before continuing across the U.S. and into the U.K. Hart, who has added multiple shows to his original lineup due to high demand, said in a press release that his ninth tour will be his most engaging one yet: “This hour is about connecting with the audience and feeding off the crowd's energy and laughter.”

4. Big East Basketball Tournament at MSG

March 12-15

For college basketball fanatics, March is about one thing — and Madison Square Garden is the place to be. This is the 43rd consecutive year MSG will host the Big East Tournament, making it the longest-standing basketball conference tournament at one venue. Fans have multiple March dates to choose from for both semi-final and final games, and tickets to fit every budget. Go big with a first-round triple-header on March 12, or save your cheering voice for the championship game on the 15th. No matter which schools make the cut, expect to be on the edge of your (hopefully courtside) seat.

5. The Roots at Blue Note Jazz Club

March 13-15

The Roots have been a hip-hop staple since the ‘80s, but since 2009, many know them as the beloved house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. On the show, Questlove, Black Thought, and their crew have proven they can pump out a tune to accompany any vocalist. But to really see them own a stage, head to one of their performances at Blue Note Jazz Club. The legendary club near Washington Square Park is an intimate venue where guests can enjoy cocktails, an American menu, and some of the city’s best live jazz.

6. St. Patrick's Day Parade

March 17

Cue the Irish dancing, bagpiping, drumming, marching, and much more, as the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes over Midtown. The parade is the oldest and largest in the world, rallying 150,000 marchers and 2 million spectators along a 1.5-mile stretch of Fifth Avenue. And it’s not just contained to the streets. They say everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, and the entire city seems to get behind the holiday. Revelers can expect a sea of green-clad spectators, pints of Guinness, packed pubs, and general merriment throughout the day.

7. New York Yankees Home Opener

March 27

For New Yorkers, nothing says spring is coming quite like the return of New York Yankees baseball. Aaron Judge and the Bronx Bombers are officially due back in town for their 2025 home opener on March 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers. Even if the weather hasn’t caught up yet, a hot dog, pinstripes, and a view of that perfectly groomed field will give fans that warm, familiar feeling. Grab a hat with that iconic interlocking NY and treat yourself to a premium seat with waiter service, or get your adrenaline pumping in the bleachers with the wildest fans in the five boroughs.
